About the Fair Company Initiative

The Fair Company Initiative was launched in 2004 by the German business newspaper Handelsblatt as a response to the “Generation Internship” trend. This trend saw young graduates, despite their good education, unable to secure permanent positions and instead working as unpaid interns. In order to create fair conditions for young professionals, Handelsblatt established a coalition of companies committed to setting rules for a good start in professional life.

Today, demographic change, skills shortages and talent acquisition are key issues for companies and the economy. In a strong labor market, companies need to attract candidates as much as candidates need to attract companies. Fair and personalized working conditions are still important, but now questions such as What is the company culture like? How does the company behave in the marketplace? How does it engage with society and the environment?

As a result, the initiative now looks at fairness in many dimensions and targets all entry-level and young professionals. In cooperation with the Institute for Employment and Employability (IBE) in Ludwigshafen, Germany, Handelsblatt is including employers in the initiative that meet the expectations of Generation Y and Generation Z and offer fair and attractive working conditions.

Background Information

Handelsblatt: Handelsblatt is the largest German-language business and financial newspaper. With around 200 editors, correspondents and permanent staff worldwide, it provides comprehensive coverage. Handelsblatt reaches more than 700,000 top decision-makers every working day.

Institute for Work and Employability: The IBE researches human resource management issues, focusing on topics such as work trends, employment and employability, demographic management, digitalization and diversity. The director of the IBE, Prof. Dr. Jutta Rump, is one of the leading professors of human resource management in the German-speaking world.

Evaluation and Methodology

The “Fair Company” award is given by the Handelsblatt to companies that particularly meet the expectations and values of entry-level employees and young professionals. The evaluation by the Institute for Employment and Employability (IBE) is based on a specially developed questionnaire, which is based on extensive analyses on the topic of fairness. The criteria assessed include work organization, collaboration and leadership, corporate culture and values, employee engagement, diversity and equal opportunity, fair market practices, social responsibility and sustainability.
